The resolution was passed with a vote of 51-48 following an extensive “vote-a-rama” session, during which Senators Rand Paul and Susan Collins voted against the proposal.Republican senators highlighted that the forthcoming tax and spending legislation would not reduce benefits for Medicaid or Medicare.
The objective of the budget resolution is to circumvent the filibuster, allowing it to be passed with a simple majority through the process of budget reconciliation.Certain Republicans, including Paul, expressed opposition to the proposal due to apprehensions regarding a $5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling.
