The Hidden Truths of Being a Server: What Every Diner Should Understand Before They Sit Down

7 Annoying Things People Do at Restaurants (That Servers Secretly Hate)

Dining out should be a pleasant experience for everyone — especially the hardworking servers who make it happen. But sometimes, we unknowingly adopt habits that frustrate staff and make their jobs harder. Here are 7 annoying things many of us do at restaurants (yes, some of us are guilty too!).

1. Snapping Fingers or Waving
Trying to get a server’s attention by snapping or waving is not just rude—it’s demeaning. A friendly glance or a raised hand is far more respectful.

2. Not Being Ready to Order
When you ask for “just another minute” multiple times, it slows down service for everyone. Glance at the menu early and be ready when your server returns.

3. Talking on the Phone While Ordering
Servers need your full attention to get your order right. Talking on the phone while they’re trying to help you is frustrating and disrespectful.

4. Making Extreme Custom Requests
A few substitutions? Totally fine. But turning a menu item into a custom meal with five changes makes the kitchen’s job unnecessarily difficult.

5. Leaving a Mess
Of course you’re not expected to clean the table, but leaving napkins everywhere, spilled drinks, and food scraps scattered isn’t kind. A little courtesy goes a long way.

6. Blaming Servers for Kitchen Delays
Your food taking too long? Chances are, it’s the kitchen—not your server. They’re just the messenger, so be patient.

7. Tipping Poorly (or Not at All)
Unless the service was truly terrible, tipping below standard is unfair. Servers rely on tips to make a living. Show your appreciation.

We’ve all made some of these mistakes—but with awareness comes better dining experiences for everyone. Let’s eat out with kindness!
