Radio host Glenn Beck recently urged his audience to “get out now” if they live in Washington state, citing concerns over legislation he claims grants unchecked power to the governor and prioritizes non-citizens for pardons. But how much of this alarm is grounded in fact?

The core of Beck’s concern—Senate Bill 5434—was a proposal to limit, not expand, the governor’s emergency powers by requiring legislative oversight after 30 days. However, the bill did not pass, and the law remains unchanged. Contrary to Beck’s claim, no new powers were granted.

Another focus was House Bill 2077, often called the “Tesla tax,” which imposes a 2% tax on zero-emission vehicle credits sold by manufacturers, such as Tesla. This tax is real, but it is part of Washington’s broader climate and revenue initiatives—not a punitive move.

Beck also pointed to House Bill 1131, which expands clemency access for individuals facing deportation. While it does allow expedited review for non-citizens in urgent immigration situations, it does not prioritize them over U.S. citizens.

In summary, Beck’s warning is largely misleading. While the bills exist, the interpretations fueling panic are exaggerated or incorrect.
