My Husband Wanted to Date Other People—Now He Regrets It

Relationships evolve — and sometimes unravel — under the weight of unspoken fears and unmet emotional needs. As open marriages and unconventional partnerships gain visibility, many who embrace them don’t always realize the depth of what they’re agreeing to… or the emotional consequences that can unfold.

One woman found herself at the center of a love triangle she never intended to create — and the aftermath forced her to question everything she once believed.

“I said ‘yes’ because I loved him.”
When my husband first mentioned an open marriage, it felt like the ground disappeared beneath me. It wasn’t a gentle conversation — it was an ultimatum. Open the marriage… or get divorced.

I loved him. I still do. So I said yes.

An unexpected turn
For months, I barely explored the idea. I stayed on the sidelines. But then, I met someone. And not just anyone — Ben, my husband’s best friend. Six months later, we started seeing each other.

At first, it felt harmless. Ben was easy to be around — charming, thoughtful, already a part of our lives. We went out a few times. We kissed. My husband didn’t like it, but he said nothing.

And then things changed. What had started as something casual turned into something… deeper. Real. Until the night Ben came over and said something I never saw coming.

A confession that changed everything
Last week, Ben sat in our living room — the same room where he’d spent holidays and birthdays with us — and confessed, “I’ve always been in love with you. Even before this started.”

I saw my husband’s face go pale. He was silent at first, but not for long.

He exploded. Accused Ben of betrayal. Of lying in wait. Of crossing a line. And I was caught in the middle — stunned, unsure of what was real anymore. I never knew how Ben felt until that moment.

Now he wants me back… but can we ever go back?
That night, my husband broke down. He admitted he’d made a mistake — that he never thought I’d fall for someone else, let alone someone so close. He said he was scared. That he wanted to close the marriage and fix what we had.

He wants another chance. He wants us again.

But can we ever truly go back?

I’m torn — between loyalty and love
I never meant to hurt anyone. Not my husband. Not Ben. I only tried to follow my heart in a situation I never wanted, never imagined.

Now I’m left with the broken pieces of two relationships — one built on history, the other on unexpected emotion — and I don’t know which, if either, can be made whole again.
