A new poll shows Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez leading Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer by 19 points in the 2028 New York Democratic primary. The survey by liberal firm Data for Progress found 55% of likely Democratic voters support or lean toward Ocasio-Cortez, while Schumer trails at 36%, with 9% undecided.

The poll highlights growing dissatisfaction among the Democratic base with Schumer, especially after he backed a GOP funding bill last month to avoid a government shutdown—a move criticized by the party’s left wing. Data for Progress, known for challenging Democratic leadership, released the poll as part of efforts to push Schumer toward a tougher stance against former President Trump.

While Ocasio-Cortez has been vague about a Senate run, Schumer has already filed for reelection. Schumer defended his vote on the GOP bill as the lesser evil to prevent empowering Trump.

Despite criticism from some liberals, Schumer has maintained his caucus’ support and remains minority leader. Political analyst Mark Halperin suggested that if Ocasio-Cortez runs, Schumer would likely have to step aside, as negative attacks against her could backfire.

Former Clinton adviser Mark Penn warned a primary fight could harm the Democratic Party, which is already at record low popularity in polls (around 29%). He cautioned that a left-wing challenge might deepen the party’s divisions and alienate moderates.
