Two weeks ago, I (F26) went on a “family trip” with my in-laws. My MIL has always seen me as “backward” because I come from a lower-class background. She constantly implied I had no etiquette.
When we arrived at the hotel, my husband suddenly got dressed and told me—last minute—that the family had dinner plans at a fancy restaurant. I wasn’t invited. His mother had assumed I wouldn’t understand the cuisine or proper etiquette, so they thought it best for me to stay at the hotel alone.
I didn’t argue. I quietly packed my bags and took the next flight home.
My husband freaked out, calling nonstop, saying I embarrassed him. He claimed I was ungrateful and irrational, even though he supposedly “begged” them to let me join. He gave me the silent treatment afterward, while his family made shady posts about me online.
When I shared my story publicly, people sided with me. One comment stood out: “They excluded you for being ‘low class’—but that’s exactly how they acted. Your husband didn’t defend you; he hid behind them.”
Turns out, the only person who lacked etiquette… was them.
