Though American, his stance on immigration strongly opposes former President Donald Trump’s policies. Throughout his social media, Leo XIV has shared posts criticizing the separation of migrant families and supporting DACA recipients. One of his posts condemned the practice of detaining children in cages, calling it morally indefensible. Another shared article challenged Catholic senator JD Vance’s views on ranking compassion.

Leo XIV’s perspective is shaped by his deep connection to Latin America. He lived and served in Peru for years and even gained Peruvian citizenship. His support for immigrants echoes his experience with Venezuelan migrants in Peru. Upon his election, he addressed the crowd in Spanish and Italian, choosing not to speak in English.

Despite differing views, Trump and Vance congratulated him. Trump even called his election a “great honor” for the U.S. Traditionally, electing an American pope was discouraged due to U.S. global power, making his rise surprising.

Known for humility and reformist leanings, Leo XIV emphasized peace and communication in his first message, continuing Pope Francis’s legacy with a global, compassionate outlook on leadership.
