If your walls are turning black in a corner, it’s no accident: find out what it really means (and how to fix it)

**If Your Walls Are Turning Black in a Corner, It’s No Accident: Here’s What It Really Means**

Black spots on your walls—especially in corners—aren’t just cosmetic issues. They’re usually a sign of **mold or mildew**, often caused by **trapped moisture, poor ventilation**, or a **leak** you can’t see. Corners are colder and receive less airflow, making them ideal breeding grounds for mold spores.

In most cases, it’s not just dirt. “If you wipe it and it returns quickly, that’s mold,” warns home inspector Kevin Ellis. Mold can trigger allergies, respiratory issues, and worsen asthma, especially in children and the elderly.

First, **don’t paint over it**—that traps the mold and makes it worse. Instead, clean the area with a solution of **vinegar and water or a mold cleaner**, then dry it thoroughly. Run a **dehumidifier**, open windows, or install exhaust fans to improve airflow.

If the mold keeps coming back, it could be a **leaky pipe or poor insulation** behind the wall. In that case, call a professional. What looks like a small stain could be a **bigger health hazard** hiding in plain sight.
