Why You May Want to Skip Daily Showers After 65
It sounds surprising, but experts now suggest that daily showers may not be ideal for people over 65. Why? Because aging skin becomes more fragile — and hot water, soaps, and frequent washing may be doing more harm than good.
As we age, our skin naturally loses moisture, elasticity, and protective oils. Collagen and elastin production slows down, and the “shield” that protects our skin — the outer layer — gets thinner and weaker. This makes skin more sensitive to cold, pollution, chemicals… and yes, even water and soap.
Taking long, hot showers or using harsh cleansers can strip away the natural oils your skin still produces. This can lead to dryness, itching, and even cracks or infections.
What to do instead?
Try showering every two to three days, using lukewarm water and gentle, moisturizing products. On off-days, a sponge bath or gentle wipe-down of key areas can keep you fresh without damaging your skin.
