For my birthday, my husband handed me a single gift: a cheap bottle of shower gel. No flowers, no card—just a scent I hated. We weren’t struggling financially, so I couldn’t understand why he’d be so thoughtless. I didn’t want to make a scene, but inside, I was crushed.
Later that day, I sat alone and cried. That scent brought back bad memories, and it felt like he hadn’t thought about me at all. In a wave of emotion, I opened the bottle, sniffed it one last time, and poured it straight down the toilet.
When he came home, smiling, he asked, “Did you find it?”
My heart stopped.
“Find what?” I asked.
“The surprise,” he said. “Check the bottle cap.”
That’s when it hit me.
He had hidden a ring in the cap—he was planning to surprise me with a second proposal. I ran to the bathroom, but it was too late. He had to fish it out himself, laughing at the mess we’d both made.
