The Janitor’s Gift
Pauline, a poor janitor and single mother, wanted to give her daughter Eve a special birthday gift. At a flea market, she found an old doll and bought it despite her tight budget.
On Eve’s birthday, as Pauline handed over the doll, it made a strange cracking sound. Inside, they found a hidden note saying, “Happy Birthday, Mommy.” Confused, Pauline returned to the vendor and met Miriam, who tearfully shared her story: she’d lost her daughter to cancer and was selling her belongings to cover hospital bills. That doll was a final gift from Miriam’s daughter, meant to bring her comfort.
Moved, Pauline and Miriam became friends. Miriam later gave Pauline money from the sales to help her and Eve. Together, they found healing and hope.
Lesson: Helping others creates comfort for both sides. A gift that brings joy to one can hold deep sorrow for another—but kindness bridges both.
