I wasn’t even offended by the fact that he gave his umbrella to a stray cat.

It was the kind of rain that soaks your socks instantly. People rushed by with umbrellas and earbuds—everyone, except a little boy. No older than five, he crouched before a shop window, holding his tiny umbrella over a soaked, shivering cat. No adult in sight. Just a child and compassion.

Before leaving, he propped the umbrella carefully and left a napkin beneath it. Scrawled in block letters: “To keep you dry. I’m hoping your person returns.”

That note broke something open in me.

I stayed. Watched. Waited. But no one came. So I brought the cat home.

Weeks passed. I named him Pom-Pom. Then one day, a woman stopped me.

“Is that Mittens?”

Tears followed. The boy was her son. He wrote the note. They’d been searching since the storm.

I returned Mittens. Her son lit up like Christmas. He hugged the cat, his mom, then me.

All because of a boy with a pom-pom hat and a heart too big for the weather.

Kindness matters. Even small acts ripple out and change lives.
